Question by ƸӜƷCarleyƸӜƷ: recently re-homed greyhound coat falling out….?
recently re-homed a greyhound.lived outside for the past 12 months before we took her in and is in really good health, her coat was lovely, teeth, gums, weight etc…. however,
we noticed a flea on her a few days after we got her ( she must of picked them up since us having her ) so obviously we flea shampooed her and got her a flea collar
a few weeks later her fur has started maulting a lot and i mean a lot, some of it in chunks.
i was wondering if someone else has greyhounds and knows why? we have kept her exact same diet so cant be food, and no fleas so not that? im thinking it could either be bringing her in after living outside for so long or maybe her flea collar?
any advise would be grateful!!!!!!!!

Well, it could be another disease, so you should see a vet. It could also be her mood. If an animal isn’t comfortable, the first thing you’ll notice is the coat. They stop washing themselves and they’re fur is falling out, losing its gloss etc… So you better see a vet!
It could be the flea collar. My vet told me that flea collars are not good for dogs. That there is some type of toxin in them. Their suggestion for flea collars was to cut them up and put a couple of pieces in the vacuum bag and maybe under the furniture. The dog could have had an allergic reaction to the fleas (my dog – lab/whippet mix is allergic to ticks). Might want to take him/her to the vet, just to be on the safe side.
do you mean malting as in sheading her hair or loosing chunks of her fear cos they are both different if she is just loosing hair then its the time of yr were they shead there fear other wise you should take her vets get her cheacked out also flea collars are no good your best just giving her sum garlic with her food works a treat haven ever had any fleas since i started giving them 2yrs ago
Quite apart from the fact that if you are in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s Spring and coming into the warm weather (one can hope – UK) and this is the time that dogs moult, it is probably because you have her indoors. These days, with central heating, dogs seem to moult year-round because we’ve basically messed up their cycle (coat-wise).
Could be the flea collar is causing a reaction of course, but I’ve used them with my hounds for years, and never had a reaction (truly – and of course they contain toxins – they are supposed to kill fleas and ticks). I guess you could get her checked out at the vet, just in case this is a more sinister skin condition (mange?), but otherwise, I’d just say it’s seasonal, and her new life-style.
ps My puppy Whippet threw her coat recently and as she has such a thin coat (compared to my Bassets!) I got concerned, but it’s now stopped coming out.
it will be her kennel coat keep brushing her til she has a silky coat
have a word with you local vet
